Dear Mr. & Mrs. LASTNAME:
MGreetings from the Dominican Republic! We would like to report that STUDENT N
LNAME is making the normal adjustments to everything here at Escuela Caribe. D
BWe would like you to give us some information and to verify other J
Hinformation. First, please make sure that we have your correct name and O
Maddress with zip code for purposes of correspondence and monthly evaluations N
Lconcerning STUDENT NAME. Also, your phone numbers and area code are needed P
Nfor our records. If there are any changes in your current mailing address or O
Mphone number, please notify us immediately in the Dominican Republic so that
we can update our records.
The following are CVS policies:
L1. Students are allowed to place a phone call to their parents upon their G
Earrival. The next regularly scheduled phone call is permitted after H
Fthree months of enrollment. Subsequent phone calls can be made every F
Dtwo months. Written permission must be received in advance. It is D
Bimportant for you to specify the date, time (your time zone), and F
Dwhether STUDENT NAME is to place or receive the call. We encourage G
Eparents to dial direct, we will tell you the number to call when you H
make you make arrangements for your first call. The area code is 809.
N2. Parental visits are encouraged. They should not occur until the student G
Ehas been enrolled for at least five months and they must be arranged J
Hthrough the Stateside office. Please let us know a month in advance so J
Hthat we can make hotel reservations in Jarabacoa and other arrangements J
Hfor your visit. Any other hotel or car rental arrangements can be made $
through a travel agent in the U.S.
N3. We encourage parents to send monetary gifts to their children for use in K
Itheir personal accounts, but ask that these gifts be limited to not more %
than five or ten dollars per month.
J4. Please do not send any packages directly in the mail as STUDENT NAME F
Dwill probably have to pay duty on all items. Instead, send a money G
Eorder or certified bank check made out to STUDENT NAME with "Escuela
Caribe" written on it.

L5. Any care packages must be sent via the Stateside office. They must be I
Gsmaller than 4x9x13 inches in size. We have an expectation that these I
Gpackages will not be sent more often than once every three months. We G
Ewould appreciate your cooperation in this matter. The Marion office C
Areserves the right to not deliver packages which are larger than
specified above.
J6. Edible gifts should only include nutritional items. Suggestions are H
Fraisins, nuts, sunflower seeds, carob bars, etc. The school reserves D
Bthe right not to deliver "junk" food to any student. Everyone is ?
expected to share edibles received with others in their home.

Indiana.
Do not mail the passport through foreign mail.
N8. If STUDENT NAME needs clothing, it can be purchased here and a bill will I

L9. All students who smoke enter into a plan to quit smoking by the end of
four months.
N10. We insist that the family and relatives of students refrain from sending J
radios, cassettee tape recorders, and rock music tapes through the mail.
N11. Mailing from the Dominican Republic to the States is not 100% reliable. I
GWe now have the option of mail being hand-carried to New York or Miami F
Dand mailed there. If you wish for STUDENT NAME to send you letters H
Fthrough the American mail, you will need to send him U.S. stamps. In K
Iaddition, one peso per letter will be taken from STUDENT NAME's personal E
Caccount since this is the amount we are charged for this service. C

Dear Mr. & Mrs. LASTNAME:
MSTUDENT NAME is living in a house with eight other male students. The school O
Mis located in Jarabacoa which is located near the center of the island. The P
Nfaculty who work closely with STUDENT NAME are: Names of (houseparents), name M
Kof (counselor), and name of (teacher). STUDENT NAME's group operates on a O
Mbehavior modification system of points and levels for measuring behavior and ;
for providing feedback to the students on their progress.
IIn addition to this, students are involved three times a week in a group H
Fmeeting. For one hour, a counselor leads students in experiences and P
Ndiscussions to help them gain greater self-acceptance and self-understanding, P
Nto build relationships with others, to support and encourage one another, and N
to become involved in an experience of personal evaluation and goal setting.
JCVS uses the redirectional model for change in working with young adults. 3
Students usually experience the following phases:
J1.
Orientation
: becoming more self-aware and learning what is
expected of them.L
J2.
Disillusionment
: abandoning some of their old behavior which was
nonfunctional and destructive.O
M3.
Internalization
: building a positive value system along with learning @
to relate to their peers and accepting their place in society.N
L4.
Stabilization
: confirming their new value system and teaching others
what they have learned.
LBy keeping these phases in mind, you should be able to watch STUDENT NAME's
growth pattern.

LIn school, students are in a classroom with a homeroom teacher and with the P
Nother members of their group. A student's program is individualized and when K
Idifficulties arise, personal tutoring is available from teaching staff. M
KWithin a nine month period, most students earn four credits based on their I
Gclassroom work plus one credit each for Physical Education and Problem M
KSolving, when they participate in these. Students accomplish more or less P
Naccording to the pace at which they work. We do provide extra time for those ?
who need it in an effort to help students keep "on schedule".
GOn the monthly report cards that you will be receiving, STUDENT NAME's G
Eprogress will be indicated on a current and an overall basis. To be O
Mcurrently on schedule, a student must complete 1 academic unit for each week L
Jof that marking period. Each course usually contains 10 units. A marking M
Kperiod normally covers four weeks, so 4 units are needed to be on schedule M
Kcurrently. However, this may vary as there are interruptions such as house N
Ltrips or retreats. If the marking period is four weeks long and includes a N
Lhouse trip, then 3 units would be required to be currently on schedule. To P
Nbe on schedule overall, students must complete 1 unit for each week they have P
Nbeen in the classroom here at CVS; therefore, "on schedule overall" is simply 7
an accumulation of all the "current" calculations".
JPlease familiarize yourself with the CVS policies concerning phone calls, K
Iparental visits, packages, spending money, etc. which were listed in the N
Lfirst letter we sent to you. We would appreciate your cooperation in these N
Lmatters. We also ask parents that they not tell students how long they will J
Hbe here or give them a date for returning home. Students who know this L
Jusually make less progress since they bide their time here. They tend to J
Hinternalize fewer of the values and ideas which we want them learn. If K
Istudents expect to leave here by a certain date, e.g. after nine months, I
Gwhether or not they have our faculty recommendation, their progress is
usually hindered.
IEvery four to five weeks, you will be receiving an evaluation of STUDENT P
NNAME's social, behavioral and academic progress. Early reports are typically L
Jpoor, so please do not be discouraged if the first months show apparently
slow progress.
KPlease feel free to write or call me or to contact Tim Blossom if you have L
Jany questions. We know that you are making a large investment in STUDENT N
LNAME's future because you have sent him to Caribe Vista School. We want to M
Kencourage you to participate in the monthly meetings for parents which are L
Jheld by Tim Blossom. We believe that your participation will enhance our
ability to help STUDENT NAME.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. LASTNAME:
IEnclosed you will find a copy of the Student Handbook which contains the K
Irules and regulations we are presently using in our system of points and J
Hlevels. The system is very restrictive but gives more privileges as a N
Lstudent moves up in levels. The requirements for earning points and levels L
Jare outlined at the beginning of each level. Points are marked by faculty
members on a daily basis.
LEnclosed you will also find a copy of the point sheet. This tells you what L
Jareas of behavior are being graded. We always wish to think of points as N
Lbeing earned. Therefore, a student earns a certain number each day in each @
category. Points are never lost; they simply were not earned.
LYour understanding of the system, how it functions, and what it is supposed N
Lto accomplish is important to STUDENT NAME's success. We need your support M
K100% behind us to help make us united in providing the best experience and #
personal growth for STUDENT NAME.
GIf you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tim Blossom for 4
further explanation, or write or call me directly.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. LASTNAME:
LThe enclosed information is for your use in planning a visit to see STUDENT M
KNAME. We hope this is possible because it will be a beneficial experience J
Hfor you in better understanding the school and the program. The second O
Menclosure is our expectations for STUDENT NAME's behavior during the visit. I
GThese expectations are set to provide consistency and fairness for all
students.
NOur policy permits students to spend four nights and five days, not including O
Mthe days of arrival and departure, with their parents. (If the student goes J
Hto the airport to meet their parents, this counts for the first night.) P
NStudents' school work must be made up in advance and they must secure written O
Mpermission from their faculty to be absent from school during the visit. We N
Lwill bring STUDENT NAME to the airport to meet you if you arrive on Tuesday P
Nthrough Saturday. We cannot guarantee this for arrivals on Sunday or Monday. N
LPlease plan on coming to Jarabacoa to meet faculty members at the school on N
Lthe second day of your visit. During your visit, we also expect to be able N
Lto discuss STUDENT NAME's progress and to invite you to share a meal in the
house where he lives.
GPlease do not hesitate to write or call if you need more information. B
Remember to bring the enclosed materials with you when you come.
